Chapter Ten

The anger hadn’t left his father’s face, Andrew realized with a sinking feeling. Even though he was trying to be reasonable and see things from his perspective, or at least find a way to compromise, his words only seemed to make the other man angrier.

“We have a legacy to protect, and I don’t think you’re taking it very seriously,” his father said, using the same tone he’d used when Andrew brought home grades that weren’t up to par. After all, an A minus should have been an A.

But this wasn’t about Andrew’s childhood. This was about how Andrew had spent the past few years doing everything he could to save the farm.

“Taking it seriously? That’s ridiculous. What do you think I’m fighting for?”

Andrew looked around the property, remembering how run-down things had become during his years in Seattle. Sure, he’d come on vacations and done what he could, and Allie and Caroline had done quite a bit. But they’d lacked the money for the big improvements, and their time was spent just keeping things going, not on major overhauls. When Andrew sold everything he owned and moved here, he’d provided a much-needed infusion of cash into the operation. It hadn’t been enough, but it had been a start.

“I’ve been killing myself here, trying to save it. Doesn’t that count for something?”

Caroline rubbed his back gently, giving him support. She hadn’t wanted to accept his money, but once she realized that he was in it just as much as she was, they’d become a team.

“The family farm is dying,” his father said. “You need to get with the future and not waste time on something that will inevitably end.”

“Everything will end at some point,” Andrew said. “Nothing lasts forever, except God, and the things God makes. But it doesn’t mean we don’t fight for the things we think are worth fighting for. The things worth living for. Maybe that doesn’t mean anything to you, but the farm is everything to me.”

Then Andrew took a deep breath and shifted his weight, stepping away from his cousin’s support. Andrew had to do this on his own. He’d never told anyone what he was about to say, but maybe it would make a difference. He glanced over at Layla, who’d been giving him encouraging looks. She’d asked him to come to terms with his grief, and he’d fought her on it. In his counseling session, he’d only given enough information to get everyone off his back. But maybe it was time to let it out.

He squared his shoulders and stared right at his father. “When Mykel died, I lost my purpose in life. I wasn’t suicidal, at least not in the sense where I contemplated doing harm to myself. But every day I wondered why I bothered getting out of bed in the morning. Saving the farm gave me something to live for. Allie’s crazy dream was the only reason I was able to put one foot in front of the other. Maybe that’s not good enough for you, but it was the only thing that gave me the will to live.
